African filmmakers selected for Realness African Screenwriters’ Residency.

The Realness 2022 African Scriptwriters Residency will take place in South Africa and Switzerland, with six talented young creators from across Africa who have been selected. The six participants will be mentored and supported to help them nurture and develop their skills to thrive in the film space.

This year, Realness Institute collaborated with the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, to allow the six participants to attend the creative incubation program called “Base camp” from August 3, 2022 to August 13, 2020. The incubator program combines screenwriting seminars, research master classes and finance workshops.

Founded in 1946, the annual Locarno Film Festival presents films in various competitive and non-competitive sections, including narrative, documentary, short, avant-garde and retrospective features.

According to the Realness Institute’s Co-Founder and Director of Artistic Operations, Cait Pansegrouw, commented on the program saying, “Our program provides the physical space and time without pressure for African filmmakers to deepen their craft to develop their ideas. of stories.

Pansegrouw further explained that as a screenwriter, it’s an amazing opportunity to have uninterrupted time to work on a story. Pasegrouw said this cohort is a new mix of filmmaking talent representing North, East, South and West Africa, which they believe will present fascinating ideas, as ideas and stories will be discussed and exchanged.

After their return from Switzerland, the scriptwriters then settled at Nirox and Farmhouse 58, in The Cradle of Humanity, for six weeks. Story consultants Ayanda Halimana and Mmabatho Kau and creative producer Cait Pansegrouw will mentor participants, in accordance with IOL.

The six talented creatives selected to fly to Switzerland are Jabu Nadia Newman, Asanda Sandulela, Lara Sousa, Ahmad Mahmoud, CJ Obasi and Youssef Michraf.
