Latest from Will Smith: Chris Rock says he’s ‘still dealing with’ Oscars slap incident at sold-out Boston show

Will Smith bangs Chris Rock at the Oscars

This year’s Oscars featured shocks, sighs and surprises – but everyone will care for a slap in the face. The Oscars took place on Sunday night, with films including The power of the dog, West Side Story, Licorice Pizza and Coda battle it out in major categories.

The biggest story of the night had almost nothing to do with the awards: a shocking altercation between Will Smith and Chris Rock sparked by a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada. Smith took the stage and appeared to punch Rock in the face, before yelling at him not to refer to his wife again.

It undoubtedly eclipsed the evening as a whole, including – a few minutes later – Smith’s win of the Best Actor Oscar for King Richard. Through tears, Smith called himself a “vessel of love” and apologized to the Academy. The LAPD has confirmed that Rock is not pressing charges. The Academy said it “does not condone any form of violence” and launched a “formal review” of what happened. Hours later, Smith apologized to Rock and said he was “embarrassed.”

Following the onstage incident, celebrities such as Alec Baldwin and Adam Sandler came out in favor of Rock, whose upcoming comedy tour has since seen a huge boost.

On Wednesday, during the sold-out Boston show of his Death of the ego tour, Rock finally addressed the altercation between him and Smith.

You can follow all the developments on the “slap that was heard around the world” in our live blog below…

Chris Rock was on stage to present the Best Documentary Award when he remarked on Pinkett Smith’s appearance.
