Meg Ryan to Direct and Star Alongside David Duchovny in Romantic Comedy ‘What Happens Later’ – Deadline

Meg Ryan set to direct and star opposite David Duchovny in romantic comedy What happens latera film based on the play by Steven Dietz Shooting star.

Bleecker Street has secured the US rights to the title and is planning a theatrical release in 2023 while HanWay Films has embarked on international sales and is launching the title at Cannes this month.

The story follows ex-lovers Willa (Ryan) and Bill (Duchovny) who are reunited for the first time since their separation decades ago, when they both find themselves snowbound, in transit, at an airport overnight . Willa is still the strong-willed, independent spirit she once was, free from any ties. Bill, recently separated, reevaluates his life and his relationship with his ex-wife and daughter. All each wants is to go home, but over the course of the night they find themselves reluctantly reunited at first, but forced to revisit their past, as well as what could have been and what could be next. new. When the versions of their shared history don’t quite match, they wonder where they go from there.

The title, which Dietz co-wrote with Kirk Lynn and Ryan, is produced by Independent Spirit Award winners Jonathan Duffy and Kelly Williams through their Ten Acre Films, Laura D. Smith and Kristin Mann, nominated for the Independent Spirit Award. Kerri Elder and Blake Elder of Rockhill Studios are executive producers with Andrew Karpen and Kent Sanderson of Bleecker Street.

The US deal was brokered by Sanderson of Bleecker Street, with Avy Eschenasy on behalf of Bleecker Street. Production is expected to begin later this year in Bentonville, Arkansas.
