Splatoon 3’s cityscape in the Spider-Verse is absolutely stunning

During the last Nintendo Direct where a number of new projects like the film that will turn Chris Pratt into Super Mario, the Japanese gaming giant also took a fresh look at its simply named sequel to Splatoon 2. Although we have seen Splatoon 3 would introduce a variety of new weapons and styling options to customize players’ custom Inklings, the latest trailer provided a significant amount of new information on the history of the game.

Two of the biggest additions to the Splatoon the traditions of the franchise that the new game needs to focus on are new places. There is the Spatlands, a desolate desert landscape devoid of much moisture; and Splatsville, the bustling urban oasis located somewhere in the Splatlands. In addition to the return of its traditional competitive mode where players compete online, Splatoon 3 Will also feature an extended single-player campaign called “Rise of the Mammalians” in which you take on Octarians who have sort of started growing fur again. Although Splatoonheroes have always had generally humanoid forms, the new trailer makes it clear that whatever evolutionary leap the Octarians go through, they are at odds with the Inklings, and the rival groups intend to work things out. as they always do: with paint guns and other art supplies turned into weapons.

The still unnamed arc teased in Nintendo’s first look immediately stood out as one of the exciting new weapons added to the game, and it’s conspicuously absent in the new trailer. In its place, however, are a handful of chosen snapshots of a new combat vehicle that looks like a cross between a Droideka and a crab, and an Inkling moving around a battlefield waving its arms in a very Spider-Man fashion. The influence of the webhead on the Splatoon the franchise seems to have spread to some Splatoon 3‘maps out Splatsville, which features some sort of mirrored phenomenon above, similar to Juan Solanas’ Upside down. The striking image of an Inkling standing on top of a building while gazing at an upside-down city immediately conjures up the scene from Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, and it’s going to be crazy to see what it’s actually like to move around the city with other characters while playing the game.

Splatoonhas always been one of Nintendo’s most stylish games, and it’s no surprise that the studio is taking inspiration from one of the finest movies of the past decade for its latest project. What is a little surprising, however, is that there is still no specific release date for when. Splatoon 3 is supposed to go down, but it’s slated for some time in 2022.
