The film festival can be a platform to celebrate cinematic diversity

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The film festival could become a platform to celebrate diversity in the world of cinema, an official from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology said on Saturday at the ‘an online press conference.

In addition, the film festival could stimulate the minds of artists, so that they can continue to create despite the pandemic, noted Ahmad Mahendra, director of the ministry of cinema, music and new media.

“The emergence of film, art and culture festivals, especially in the midst of the pandemic, shows that the crisis does not diminish the creative spirit of artists,” he noted.

“This should be supported by all parties as a form of appreciation for creative work,” he said.

Meanwhile, Jakarta Art Board (DKJ) vice chairman Hikmat Darmawan said the film festival, in addition to being a collective viewing space, could also become a platform to celebrate and praise filmmakers and the cinema itself.

“It’s a space to celebrate the criticism, the festival, the competition and the idea,” he explained.

The various film festivals in Indonesia are important because a diverse society is certainly hungry for varied stories.

“For example, there was JAFF (Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival) in Yogyakarta. A while ago, there was Jakarta Film Week,” Darmawan said.

In addition to these festivals, various other activities have been organized nationally or globally, he said.

“(Film Festival) is a space to exchange ideas and information as well as to get to know each other. It is also a platform to know each other through the audiovisual media which are constantly growing and cultivating collective knowledge” , he said.

Echoing this sentiment, Garin Nugroho asserted that each film festival has its unique characteristic and perspective. In addition, he felt that the film festival could be a platform for presenting obscure films.

“In addition to celebrating and discussing films, the festival also creates a space where all types of films, even the most obscure ones, have a space to grow,” he explained.
