The Women’s Film Festival plans screenings on March 23 and 30

The second annual women’s film festival will close with films for the last two Wednesdays in March.

The monumental “Daughters of Dust” by Julie Dash will be screened on March 23. A 1902 crisis in a tight-knit Gullah Geechee community on St. Helena Island off the coast of South Carolina reveals the heartbreaking decision to move north. escape the Jim Crow South. “Daughters of the Dust” was the first feature film directed by an African-American woman. The film was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the 1991 Sundance Film Festival and Arthur Jafa won the Best Cinematography award there for his work. “Daughters of the Dust” has been nominated by the Library of Congress for inclusion in the National Film Registry for his significant contributions to American cinema.

Closing the month-long festival on March 30, the famous “Whale Rider”, whose young protagonist won the Oscar for best actress at the age of 13. Niki Caro directed this 2002 drama about a Maori girl seeking to become the chief of the tribe, the first woman to attempt the difficult ordeal.

The Key West Chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) promotes women’s rights to reproductive health care, equity in education and employment, freedom from violence, justice for LGBTQIA citizens and a life free of racism. The Tropic Cinema is an award-winning, independent, non-profit cinema that screens popular, classic, foreign, regional and experimental films.

All screenings begin at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available online at or at the door. For everyone’s safety, the COVID protection policy requires that participants present a negative PCR performed within the last 72 hours or offer a completed vaccination document and wear masks.
